PromptSec vs. Lakera.
Lakera Guard protects LLM applications your team builds. PromptSec protects what your entire workforce pastes into AI chat tools they didn't build. Different layers, rarely in competition.
Lakera Guard is an API-layer firewall that engineering teams integrate into an LLM application they're building, to catch prompt injection and jailbreaks aimed at that application. PromptSec is a browser extension that protects the much larger surface of employees using third-party AI chat tools like ChatGPT and Claude — no code integration, no application to own.
Two different layers
Lakera Guard
A developer-facing guardrail: an API or SDK your engineering team calls to screen inputs and outputs of an LLM application you own, for prompt injection, jailbreaks, and data leakage in that specific product's traffic.
PromptSec
An employee-facing control: a browser extension that watches what any employee types into any AI tool running in a tab — including the shadow AI usage nobody built an integration for, because there's nothing to integrate with.
Side by side
Based on publicly available information; check Lakera's own site for current specifics.
| Lakera Guard | PromptSec | |
|---|---|---|
| What it protects | An LLM application your engineering team builds — the API calls between your app and a model provider. | The AI chat tools your whole workforce already uses in a browser — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity. |
| Integration point | An SDK or API gateway your developers wire into the application's request/response path. | A Chrome MV3 extension deployed through browser policy — no code to write, no application to modify. |
| Who it's for | Engineering and ML teams shipping an LLM-powered product or internal tool. | Security and IT teams who need visibility and control over what any employee sends to any AI tool. |
| Typical use case | Stopping a jailbreak or injected instruction from reaching the model your application calls. | Stopping an employee from pasting an Aadhaar number, a client's source code, or an AWS key into a chat window. |
Do you need both?
Often, yes. If you're shipping your own LLM-powered product, a guardrail like Lakera's protects that product's inputs and outputs. That says nothing about what the same employees paste into ChatGPT on their lunch break — a separate exposure PromptSec is built for.
Neither is exhaustive on its own. What PromptSec detects today, and what it doesn't yet is published at the same size as what works.
